Sonya has worked in the public sector for over 25 years. She started her career as an engineer in highway management and then moved onto specialise in the fields of road safety education, behaviour and casualty reduction. Sonya has been in a management role for over 15 years – formerly the Service Manager for Safer Highways at Via East Midlands with a team of over 160 staff. Via East Midlands deliver highway services for Nottinghamshire County Council. Her current role at Derbyshire County Council will be heading up their casualty strategy.
As Chair of Road Safety GB Sonya is involved at a strategic level in road safety at both a national and international level. This also provides her with the opportunity to input into aims to improve cycle safety.
Sonya’s successes have included winning submissions for both the Highways Excellence Awards ‘Road Safety scheme of the year’ and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award presented to Nottinghamshire for their outstanding contribution to Road Safety.
Her work ethos is to continue to maintain and develop a professional, forward thinking and innovative approach to road safety.
Sonya is a keen road cyclist who trains with a team and is very passionate about cycling.
